Reflections and Resolutions

As 2015 comes to a close, I've spent much of my time reflecting on what could be called one of the best years of my life. This past year has brought me numerous memories and opportunities that have helped shaped who I will be going into 2016. Through my reflections, I have noticed a trend in the major moments that stick out from this year— they all are related to Sigma Kappa. In order to organize my thoughts and gratitude, I have compiled a list of five reflections and resolutions to carry me into the upcoming year.
1. Being welcomed into Sigma Kappa: I was a stranger to the organization when I first accepted my bid to Sigma Kappa. I wasn’t previously friends with anyone in my new member class, nor did I know any of the older sisters. To be honest, the thought of going in alone completely terrified me. Fortunately, this worried feeling was replaced with warm smiles and open arms. I was welcomed into the chapter the second I jumped off the stage on bid day. Within 24 hours of accepting my bid, I was laughing in Eick with 3 sisters whom I now can’t imagine life without. I am beyond grateful for being immediately accepted into an organization and group of sisters.
Resolution: For 2016 (and beyond) I resolve to welcome every future new member into Sigma Kappa the way I was. I promise to be that smiling face or Eick date to any new member who may feel alone at times.
2. Getting my big: As cliché as it sounds, my big has become my best friend, my role model, and that nagging voice in my head that pushes me to try new things. My big is one of the most adventurous, spontaneous, and insightful people that I know. She says yes to everything and never passes up an opportunity to try something new. At times, she is the complete opposite of myself, but thats why I think we are so compatible. I have always been more cautious, reserved, and lacked spontaneity. However, since meeting my Big I have learned to enjoy the little things in life and live in the moment.
Resolution: I resolve to go on as many spontaneous adventures with my big before the “G” word approaches **loud sobs**. Whether they are late night trips to Halo Farms, surprising GBig in Philly, or random concerts around NJ, I promise to take every and all opportunities with Big to create lasting moments.
3. Airband 2015: This is perhaps one of the more grueling and exhilarating memories from the past year. All of the blood, sweat, tears, and late night practices that went into this performance were completely worth it. I would not have wanted to stay up until 3 am dancing with any other group of people than the Airband crew.
Resolution: I resolve to continue to dance every time any Airband song plays. Whether I’m in my dorm room or in the middle of the mall, I will break out into every and all of the crazy Airband moves.
4. Being elected as Merit Chair: Sigma Kappa has inspired me to explore my full leadership potential and become more involved in the community. I am so thankful to be part of an organization that believes in me and has elected me into a leadership position. I would not have been able to apply for any position if it wasn’t for the endless support from my sisters.
Resolution: I resolve to work as hard as I possibly can to fulfill my duties as merit chair. It is such an honor to give back the organization that has given me so much in such a short amount of time. Additionally, I resolve to become more involved, not just in Sigma Kappa, but in the TCNJ community as a whole.
5. Making lifelong friendships: Sigma Kappa has introduced me to a group of incredible and inspiring women. I can honestly say that I have made some of my lifelong friends through Sigma Kappa. This organization has introduced me to people who I would trust with my life. I have met people who I feel completely comfortable being myself around and who I know will always have my back. I can confidently say that I have met my future bridesmaids.
Resolution: I resolve to continue to strengthen the bonds I have created within Sigma Kappa and to reach out to those who I do not know as well. I promise to be there for my sisters no matter what, knowing that they are always there for me.
